The Eastern University men's soccer team scored twice in the opening half, and added another in the second to earn a convincing 3-0 victory over Arcadia University in the first game of the Cialella Invitational at Rutgers-Camden University.
Terry Fry scored twice in the win.
Fry opened the scoring when he banged home a loose ball in front of the net for his second strike of the young season. The Eagles controlled much of the play in the first half, but still gave the Scarlet Knights more chances than the Eastern coaching staff would have liked to have seen. Arcadia's best chance came with just under twenty minutes to play in the first half, when a forward intercepted a pass deep in the Eastern zone with Eastern goalkeeper Michael Dorsch outside of his box. Dorsch made a big sliding tackle with his feet and the crisis was averted.
Out of that chance the Eagles found their focus and began to increase the pressure on the Arcadia net. That pressure resulted in a big insurance goal late in the period as Morgan Hunt beat a player on the right flank and dropped a ball off to senior midfielder Ryan Castle who drove his shot into the lower left corner of the net.
Fry added his second of the game midway into the second half when he redirected a Kyle Hurst shot into the top of the net from eight yards out. With his third goal of the year, Fry equals his season total from 2007.
Eastern Head Coach Mark Wagner expressed concern with his squad after the match saying, "We have to be pleased with a 3-0 result, but we got away with some bad decisions and sloppy execution. We will need to get better." The Eagles will have a day to recover before taking on tournament host and nationally ranked Rutgers-Camden on Sunday afternoon. That game will begin at 4:30.Â
