Ashley Hackman and Jillian DiRenzo found each other again on Saturday. DiRenzo buried a pair of Hackman crosses in the first half on the way to her first career hat trick in a 5-0 win over the University of Mary Washington on Saturday.
Eastern opened the scoring in the 17th minute as Hackman ran out of the middle to the right flank. The senior All-America curled a cross behind the back line that DiRenzo nodded home for her first goal of the year. The tandem that had combined for so much offense in 2007 had only connected once prior to today in 2008. Â
The two connected again as Hackman slid a ball through a seam from the right side that DiRenzo cracked into the back of the net with a one-time strike. Eastern held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half. DiRenzo nearly picked up her third goal of the half, but her close range attempt off a Katie Ruth cross was turned away by the Mary Washington goalkeeper.
Eastern again controlled play at the outset of the second half. In the 67th minute, the hosts took advantage of one of their five second-half corner kicks to push their advantage to three. Senior center back Steffie Sauder blasted a right-footed shot of a nifty pass from Corie Brant for her second goal of the year.
One minute later, DiRenzo completed her hat trick after first-year midfielder Kristine Zeiset broke through the Mary Washington back line, made the goalkeeper commit, and laid a ball off with a big net for DiRenzo. Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw said of the play, "It was great to see Z make that run, and it was a very unselfish play for her to leave that off for Jill. We did a very good job of finding targets today, and Jill's finishing was right there."
Kristin Watson created the final goal of the match in the 79th minute with a strong run up the right side. The senior forward whipped a cross into central space that Tess Beckwith headed home for her first career goal.
Amanda Daveler made a pair of saves to pick up her third shutout of the year in net for Eastern. The Eagles return to action next Saturday with their Freedom Conference debut at King's College. That game is scheduled for a 5:00 pm start.
