In their first year in the new league, Eastern University opened Freedom Conference play with a 6-0 win at King's College. Senior midfielder Ashley Hackman eclipsed the Eastern career mark for total points as she added to her total with a goal and two assists.
The Eagles struggled to unlock the Monarch defense early, but a pair of first –year players finally combined to put the visitors on the board in the nineteenth minute. Allison Inch corralled a ball thirty-five yards from goal and slipped a bending pass in front of the goal. Kristine Zeiset ran onto it and slotted a shot into the lower corner for her first goal of the year.
The Eagles continued to find chances, but they were unable to put them away as Monarch goalkeeper Rachel Donatiello made seven first half saves. In the 34th minute Lauren Roe earned the box on the dribble. A King's defender upended the junior midfielder and the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick. Kara Neef converted the penalty kick for her first goal of the year.
Up 2-0 at half, the Eagles continued to control play, but the Monarch defense continued to ward off the Eastern attack. In the 63rd minute, Corie Brant broke through and hit the underside of the crossbar, but Hackman's rebound shot when high, and the lead stood at two.
Moments later Hackman took matters into her own hands. She beat a trio of defenders and placed her fourth goal of the season into the upper right corner from fifteen yards out. Hackman entered the evening tied with Stephanie Frank and Ruthie Parkinson with 126 career points. The All-American from Perkasie, PA already held the school record for career assists.
Hackman's favorite target over the past eighteen months has been junior forward Jillian DiRenzo. Moments after her goal, Hackman beat her defender on the right side of the field and drove toward goal. After driving deep in the box and making the goalkeeper commit, she laced a ball across the face of the net for DiRenzo to tuck home. The two combined again in the 73rd minute when Hackman lifted a ball into space behind the Kings back line. DiRenzo finished her fifth goal of the year to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
First-year forward Tess Beckwith completed the scoring for the Eagles with a strong run through traffic and shot to the lower corner.
Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw said of the day, "We struggled a little early, but I thought we figured out what we needed to to solve the game. To have Ashley achieve this milestone in her first game in the new conference is kind of a neat thing."
Amanda Daveler made three saves to preserve her fourth shutout of the year. The Eagles begin a three game week on Monday with a home game against Montclair State University.
