Jill DiRenzo scored in the 66th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift Eastern University Women's Soccer to a 2-1 win over Montclair State University. It is the third straight win for the Eagles.
Though the Eagles controlled much of the play early, both teams had chances and hit shots off the crossbar in the opening moments. Just two and a half minutes into the game, Ashley Hackman beat her defender and ripped a right- footed shot that hit the underside of the crossbar. No offensive player was able to control the rebound, and the chance went unfinished.
Moments later, Montclair nearly took the lead on a 35 yard blast from Rachel Senyszyn. Amanda Daveler touched the shot up into the crossbar and Kara Neef cleared the ball out of trouble as her goalkeeper hit the post. Daveler had to come out of the game, and Amber Cummins jumped into the game to relieve her.
Hackman again took control of the game in the tenth minute. The senior All-American took a nice pass from Corie Brant on the left wing. A Redhawk defender poked the ball away, but Hackman immediately won it back and took a strong dribbling run toward goal. She cut through a pair of defenders and drilled a right-footed blast just inside the far post for her fifth goal of the year.
Montclair again tested the Eastern goal in the 23rd minute with a 20 yard shot to the top part of the goal from Christyn Scillieri. Cummins was equal to the task as she too parried the ball into the underside of the crossbar. The Eastern defense regrouped and kept the Redhawks from shooting for the remainder of the half.
Just four minutes into the second half, Senyszen leveled the score with her team best seventh goal of the year. The freshman midfielder picked up a ball in transition and scored her breakaway chance. That shot was the only shot of the second half for the visitors.
The Eagles created several chances over the next minutes, but the Redhawks held their ground and Leah Tepperman made a pair of good saves to keep the game level.
Hackman set up the game winner with a strong angled ball from near midfield that found DiRenzo behind the Montclair back line 25 yards from goal. When the junior forward received the ball and looked up to see Tepperman aggressively closing the angle, she looped a high shot over the goalkeeper and into the top of the net for her sixth tally of the year.
Cummins survived a late collision in the box to keep the lead safe. Eastern Head Coach Dan Mouw said of the win, "This was a good win against a very tough opponent. I am pleased that we were able to find the important second goal. It is a tough thing for a goalkeeper to all of a sudden be in the game. Amber did a great job being ready and managing her box."
Cummins was credited with one save in the win, while Leah Tepperman made six saves for the visitors.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday with their final non-conference game of the year at #7 Messiah College.
