Ryan Castle finished a chance in the third minute of overtime to lift
the Eastern University men's soccer team to a 1-0 home win over Drew
University. The win is the second straight 1-0 win for the Eagles.
Drew entered this afternoon's game without a loss, and the Rangers played with confidence through the opening moments of the contest and built an 8-2 advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes of action. Michael Dorsch made five first-half saves including a pair of outstanding stops to turn away a pair of consecutive corner kicks in the 32nd minute.
The Eagles created a few first-half chances, but the Drew back-line was able to keep Terry Fry and
the rest of the Eastern team from getting clean strikes on goal. Fry
put both first half shots on frame, but Jeff Rogers saved both. Drew
earned five first half corners.
Drew created three great scoring chances in the first five minutes of the second half, and it appeared that the Eastern defense was on the ropes, but the Eagles rebounded and began to take momentum. Mike Leitzel, Nate Goble and the rest of the Eagles held the Rangers to just three more shots over the last forty-three minutes.
As
the game entered the seventy-fifth minute, the Eagles raised the level
of pressure to a new level. A Drew foul in the midfield resulted in an
Eastern restart from forty-five yards out. Terry Fry lofted a serve
into the afternoon sun that found its way to the ground deep in the Ranger box. Grant Supplee and Kyle Hurst ripped shots from close range, but the score remained tied as the Drew defense scrambled.
Moments
later Brian Raffle worked his way central as he combined with several
players in the midfield. The junior wing scored the game-winner last
Saturday, but his 22 yard strike flew just over the upper corner and
the teams remained tied. The Eagles fended off a late corner kick to
make it to overtime and set up Castle's heroics.
The Eastern team
made a concerted effort to lock the ball in the attacking zone
throughout the second half, and that pressure created the game-winner
in the third minute of overtime. Alex Clark picked off a short clear on
the right side. The junior captain found a gap in transition and
slotted a ball through that looked like it was over-hit for Fry. Castle
timed his run perfectly and found himself in alone. The senior
calmly pushed the ball into the lower corner for the game-ending
strike.
Dorsch
finished with seven saves to earn his fourth shutout of the year. The
Eagles return to action next Wednesday with a key regional game at
Gettysburg College.
