It looked like it was going to be easier than it was. After winning the opener 6-2 and jumping to a 5-0 lead in the nightcap, the Eagles needed a clean play, a strong throw and a good stretch to hold on for a 5-4 win and a sweep of Immaculata in an important PAC softball contest. The win lifts the Eagles to 16-14 on the year and 9-5 in conference play.
Raychel Weis kept the visitors in check in the opener. The junior right-handed pitcher allowed just one earned run and one walk while striking out four batters for the win. Weis also enjoyed a nice afternoon at the plate with a 2-3 performance.
Alissa Brubaker did much of the damage for the Eagles at the plate as the junior lead-off hitter hit safely in each of her four at bats. The speedy shortstop started the contest with a triple. She then raced home with the game's first run on an overthrow. The Eagles picked up a second run when Elise Murante knocked in Tanya Guthrie with a two-out single.
The Mighty Macs picked up a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from Melissa Fetter to cut the lead in half, but Brubaker again led off the bottom of the inning for the Eagles. Brubaker ripped a double. After advancing to third on a ground out. Brubaker scored on a Guthrie single.
Stephanie Weaver knocked in a pair of runs with a clean single in the fourth to give the Eagles a 5-1 edge. In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles picked up another run when Brubaker knocked her fourth hit of the day into the outfield to score Weaver. Weis handled a little jam in the top of the seventh with just one run scored to escape with the win.
Game two again saw the Eagles strike first. In the bottom of the third, the Eagles picked up a par of runs on RBI singles from Murante and Val Heffline. The Eagles picked up a single run in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Molly Oberholzer delivered the big blow in the fifth with an RBI double.
Ashley Lewis had cruised through six innings, but ran into some trouble in the seventh. the Mighty Macs built a rally with solid swings, and after scoring four runs, put runners on second and third with two outs. Lewis threw a pitch down and away that Megan Favazza ranged to her left, scooped the ball, and fired to Amy Bellows at first base. Bellows stretched to full extension to meet the throw which just beat a hustling Missy Hopely for the final out of the final out of the day.
Lewis finished the afternoon with five strikeouts. The Eagles return to action on Friday at Gwynedd-Mercy College.
