the series with PAC rival Misericordia University. The Eagles jumped to an early 7-1 lead, but wildness in the middle innings allowed the visiting Cougars to escape St. Davids with an 11-8 lead.
Coach Curley said of the day, "we just gave them too many base-runners with wildness from the mound. That's not who we have been all year, and I hope that we are able to work out of this for tomorrow."Â The visiting Cougars had at least one runner reach base in each of their nine at-bats, as the Eastern staff issued 11 walks and hit three batters.
Davis Murray started the Eastern scoring with a two-run double in the first. He drove in Kenny Long, who had doubled and Phil Clark who had walked. The Eagles left the bases loaded to end the first.
After Misericordia picked up a run in the bottom of the inning, the Eastern attack took advantage of a pair of errors to seize a six run lead in the bottom of the inning. Murray knocked in two more with another double, and John Montague drove in his 17th and 18th runs of the year with a double of his own. The Eagles again left a pair on to close the inning.
Misericordia put together a five-run rally with station-to-station baseball in the top of third to close the gap to 7-6. The Eagles looked to rally in the bottom of the inning with two runners on, but Nate Newman made a shoestring grab of another Davis Murray missile down the line in left.
The Cougars tied the game with a single run in the fourth. The Eagles rallied and took the lead back with a single run in the bottom of the inning on a Mike Santello single. The inning could have been bigger, but Santello's 350 foot shot down the line with two runners on curled just foul. The Eagles' second base standout hung in and connected for a single, but the rally ended with just one Eastern run.
The Cougars took the lead with a three-run fifth. That inning could have been worse had reliever Brian Miller not induced an inning-ending 1-2-3 double-play.
Miller worked out of trouble for his entire outing, but was able to give up just a single run over his last four innings of work to keep the game within reach for the Eastern bats. Unfortunately for the home side, the Eagles were not able to generate any serious threats the rest of the way.
The same two teams meet tomorrow in Dallas for what could prove to be a very important doubleheader in the PAC playoff race.
