Eastern University Volleyball improved to a 31-1 as they won another pair of matches today at the Elizabethtown College Invitational. Kara Hildebrand led all Eastern hitters with 24 kills in wins over Washington and Jefferson College and Cortland State.
The Eagles survived a tight first set and then closed out the match in three against the Presidents. Hildebrand hit .500 with 12 kills on just 20 swings. Nicole Burns also registered double-figure kills as she put down 11 balls. Courtney Reinhold hit .400 with nine kills on 20 swings. With the win, this year's squad became the fourth Eastern team to reach 30 wins.
Not satisfied with thirty, the Eagles took on a tough Cortland State team in pursuit of their 31st and the tournament title. The 29-10 Red Dragons provided a formidable challenge, but the Eagles ground out a 25-18 win in the opening set. Cortland rallied to take the second set 25-20 before the Eagles were able to earn a 25-18 third set win. The Eagles scuffled to a .229 hitting percentage in the second set, but they rebounded in the third set with a 25-18 win. Eastern closed out the match with a 25-20 fourth set. Eastern found a good offensive rhythm in the final set as they put balls down at a .324 clip.
The Eastern defense was critically important in the win. Reinhold led the way with 24 digs, Nikki Kummerer picked up 20 digs, and Maria Horning added a season-best 19 digs. The Eagles also put up a strong presence at the net. Reinhold registered three solo blocks and three assists and Mandy Platt added three solo blocks and four assists.
Hildebrand led the hitters with 12 kills and Reinhold added 11 kills. Mandy Platt recorded nine kills. Horning ran the offense with 43 assists. Reinhold and Horning earned All-Tournament honors and Reinhold was named as the Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
The top-seeded Eagles await their opponent for a Wednesday night playoff match-up. That game will be the third home playoff game of the day Wednesday and will begin at 7:00 pm.
