Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball Advances to Final with 3-0 Win

Eastern University Volleyball continued to run through their inaugural season in the Freedom Conference with an efficient 3-0 Semifinal win over Wilkes University. Nicole Burns led the way with 12 kills and four blocks.

The Eagles received serve to open the match. After a quick side out, they ran out to a 6-0 lead. As impressive as the Eastern attack has been over the course of the year, it was the Eastern defense that sparkled early. A diving Eagle seemed to pop up every hitting attempt from the visitors. The Colonels took 36 attempts in the opening set, of those, only three hit the ground. Nikki Kummerer and Maria Horning each picked up 14 digs for the match, and Courtney Reinhold added 13. Wilkes managed to side out to cut the deficit to 6-1, but the Eagles quickly put together another solid run of kills and pushed the set out of reach.

The Eastern hitters put pressure on the defense with aggressive swings, and they finished the opening set with 16 kills on 27 attempts for a .481 hitting percentage. The Eagles won the first set 25-10.

Mandy Platt and Kara Hildebrand finished the match with nine kills apiece and Reinhold added eight. Eastern won the second set 25-14, and finished off the match with a 25-9 third-set win. The Eagles hit .370 for the match. Horning again ran the show with 37 assists.

The 24th ranked Eagles will host third seeded DeSales in the Conference Championship game at 6:00 pm on Saturday. The winner of that game will receive the Freedom Conference Automatic Qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Eastern won a tough 3-0 decision at DeSales earlier in the year.
