Eastern Field Hockey scored three times in the opening fifteen minutes of the game to seize control of a critical Freedom Conference match-up against King's College. The Eagles scored another goal late in the first half and held on for a 4-1 win.
Both teams entered the day at 3-1 in Conference play, and the Eagles were still smarting from a difficult 2-1 loss at Wilkes on Saturday. Eastern Head Coach Camrin Azzarano wanted to see her team get off to a good start, and Lindsay Moyer delivered an early blow to make that happen. The junior midfielder took a pass from Elya Troup and after taking a touch to push the ball inside the circle crushed a shot to the lower left corner of the cage for her team-best 11th goal of the year.
The game leveled out as both teams earned some possession over the next few minutes, but the Eagles caught a great break in the eleventh minute. Eastern cleared a ball deep into the King's end, and Kim Campbell pursued it aggressively. Erin McGinley tried to kick the ball clear for the Monarchs, but Campbell blocked the clear with her stick and carried the ball into the goal for her 11th goal of the year.
Meanwhile, Eastern's Carrie Kline shadowed Debbie Wychock all over the field. Wychock entered the day with 27 goals, and Kline held the standout forward without a shot in the first fifteen minutes of play. Azzarano said of Kline's efforts, "Carrie did a great job on her. She [Wychock] is a really good player, and we knew that keeping her away from the ball was going to be very important for us. Our whole defense played well, but Carrie's performance was really important."
Eastern freshman Yvonne Herbster pushed the Eastern lead to 3-0 in the fifteenth minute. Troup dropped a pass back to her fellow Midd-West High School graduate, and Herbster cracked a first time shot to the lower right corner.
The Eagles managed their 3-0 lead and kept the pressure on the Monarch goal. Troup picked up her own goal in the 34th minute on a penalty corner goal from Kristin Brownett.Â
The Eagles held a 6-4 advantage in first half shots and a 3-1 edge in penalty corners. Laura Ressler made a pair of saves in the first half to keep the Eastern advantage safe.
Wychock finally found her goal in the 58th minute of the match on a strong strike from the top of the circle. The Eastern defense stopped any further progress by the Monarchs, and the 4-1 advantage ended up as the final score. Danielle Danser had a pair of defensive saves for the Eagles.
Azzarano said of the win, which puts the Eagles alone in second place in the Freedom. "We played as a team today. We learned a lot from the weekend loss at Wilkes. Every game in this conference is a big game. It was good to see our girls meet the challenge."
Eastern returns to action at Manhattanville College on Saturday.
