Eastern Field Hockey finished the match with a big advantage in penalty corners, but the host Colonels made the best use of their corners as they scored on two of those chances to remain unbeaten in Freedom Conference play.
The Eagles fell behind in the 24th minute on a penalty corner goal from Diana Wright. Down 1-0 at the break, the Eagles still felt the chances would continue to come. Eastern earned 11 penalty corners in the opening half, but Wilkes held a 7-5 advantage in shots. Eastern head coach Camrin Azzarano said of the first half, "We were not able to convert our corners into quality shots at goal, and that put us behind in the game. I think our youth showed in that."
Things got worse for the Eagles when Wilkes converted another penalty corner into a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the second half. Eastern goalie Laura Ressler thwarted an additional Colonel chance when she turned away a penalty stroke in the 39th minute.
The Eagles battled back, and Kim Campbell cut the Wilkes' lead back to one in the 48th minute, but Lindsey Davenport and the Wilkes defense made the lead stand up. Azzarano said of the result. "It was a tough day for us. We looked young, and Wilkes is a good team. We will bounce back from this."
Eastern (8-6, 3-1) returns to action with an important Freedom Conference game against pre-season favorite King's. That game will start at 3:45 at Eastern.Â
