Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Restarts Undo Men's Soccer

Though the Eagles controlled much of the play, Misericordia junior Max Campbell was able to take advantage of a pair of restarts to lift the visiting Cougars to a 2-1 overtime win. Campbell created the first chance himself, when a right-footed shot from thirty yards out struck an Eastern defender in the hand. Campbell finished the resulting penalty kick cleanly.

The Eagles battled back and began to take possession of the game more seriously as the first half progressed. That possession looked as though it would turn into a goal when Taylor VanBrackle served a backside ball that fellow sophomore forward Brian Raffle headed off the crossbar. It was not unitl the 41st minute of the match that the Eagles could tie the game. The play developed out of the midfield with a series of passes finding first year forward Drew Bixler on the right flank. Bixler took on his defender and curled a bending ball to the back post that Raffle headed home for his first goal of the year.

Though the Eagles continued to press forward and own possession, Campbell took one last chance in the opening frame for the Cougars with just over two minutes left. His strike from thirty yards out looked to be headed toward the upper right corner, but Eastern keeper Noah Bartelt tipped the ball over the bar for a corner.

The second half of the game lacked rhythm and cohesiveness and both teams played high pressure and subbed liberally. Both teams had quality scoring chances as Bartelt and Misericordia keeper Andrew Lloyd had to work to keep their nets clean. Lloyd finished the match with nine saves and Bartelt had six.

The overtime period had only one shot, as the Eagles committed a foul twenty-five yards out in the middle of the field. Campbell bent a hard ball over the wall and into the upper right corner for the game-winner.

The Eagles, who now sit at 2-2 with a pair of overtime losses, travel to DeSales Saturday for a 3:00 pm non-conference match.
