Women's Soccer Wins to Stay Atop the PAC

Eastern University Women's Soccer continued its stretch of road games and picked up an important PAC result with a 3-2 win at Centenary College.

From the beginning, the game turned into a grinding affair, with the Eastern backs turning away the Cyclones running out of midfield. The hosts won the early midfield battle, and were able to keep the Eastern team from delivering an accurate final ball. The Cyclone pressure paid off in the tenth minute when Sam Vanni pounced on a  deflected clear and clipped a ball into the upper left corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles responded within the minute as Chrissy West earned the edge on the right side and slotted a ball across the face that Jill DiRenzo knocked home for her 13th of the season.

Both teams struggled to maintain possession over the next twenty-five minutes. In the 43rd minute, West picked up a loose ball in the midfield and played a ball into forward space for Kristin Watson. Watson outpaced her mark and slipped a ball into the lower corner for her 5th tally of the season.

Up 2-1 at the half, the Eagles seized momentum of the match in the second half, but still had to defend restarts and several dangerous flip throws from Vanni. The game finally broke open midway through the half when first year midfielder Kaylena Crompton scored her first collegiate goal on a rebound in traffic off a Steffie Sauder corner kick.

The Cyclones continued to turn away the Eastern attack, and picked up a Tanya DiDonna goal in the 85th minute to cut into the Eastern lead.

The Eagles closed out the game defending a pair of restarts in the final minute to hold on for the win. The win pushes the Eagles, who have played nine of their first eleven games on the road to 9-2 on the year with an unblemished 6-0 mark in the PAC.

Coach Mouw said of his team's effort, "We had to battle through the whole game, and we looked weary at times, but I am very proud of the players for persisting through a tough physical game where we struggled. This one wasn't stylish, but we got a great effort from the team with a great contribution from Kristin and Kaylena coming in to the game."

Eastern had a 20-9 advantage in shots and an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Eagles play their tenth road game of the year in a 3:00 start Saturday at Montclair State.
