The Eastern University Women's Soccer Team battled their counterparts from Montclair State for nearly a hundred minutes before Nicole Grindle scored her sixth goal of the year to give the road-weary Eagles a 1-0 win.
The Eagles jumped to a quick start with action in front of the Redhawk goal early. Lauren Roe hit the inside of the left upright in the second minute of the match. Eastern held a 6-3 edge in shots for the first half, and had several high quality opportunities turned away by Montclair goalkeeper Leah Tepperman, who was credited with a pair of first half saves. Both she and Eastern goalkeeper Amanda Daveler were able to manage their boxes to eliminate chances before they turned into shots.
The Red Hawks had their best chance of the opening period pushed wide on a nice play from Steffie Sauder who had recovered behind Daveler to make the save. Eastern was able to create several dangerous chances on restarts as Chrissy West's header on a corner kick went inches wide midway through the half.
The second half saw both teams create chances, with the Eagles earning three more corner kick chances including a ball that landed in the middle of traffic inside the six in the 82nd minute that somehow eluded the goal. Daveler was credited with just two saves on the match, but was called upon to play a big role in the Eastern defense with several plays off her line in the second half. The junior keeper nearly picked up her first assist of the year late in regulation when a booming punt cleared the Montclair State Backline and put Jill DiRenzo in toward goal, but a late recovery cleared the ball wide for a corner kick.
After ninety minutes of scoreless action, the Eagles would play their first overtime period of the year. In the 99th minute, the Eagles won possession in midfield and found Ashley Hackman facing forward near midfield. The 2006 All-Mid-Atlantic performer took space with the dribble before slotting a ball through for Grindle. Grindle's left-footed shot ticked the inside of the left upright before rolling into the back of the net. Hackman's assist is her 14th of the season.
The win is the seventh in a row for the Eagles, who have played 10 of their first 12 games away from Olson Field, but have still forged a 10-2 start to their year. Coach Mouw said of the game, "I am very pleased with the way we competed through the game. I thought Steffie had a great afternoon organizing the back for us, and Nicole's work on the goal was outstanding. We have work to do, but I am very pleased with the work we did to earn the result today."
The Eagles return home Tuesday to face second ranked Messiah College in a 4:00 start.Â
