Mia Zucker scored her first goal of the season in the 85th minute and
Emily Monforto added her second goal of the season three minutes later as Eastern Women's Soccer came away with a 2-0 win over Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday. Despite adverse weather conditions, Eastern Women's Soccer controlled the pace of play from start to finish to earn its fourth win of the fall.
The Eagles dominated in both possession and field position, particularly in the second half. Eastern outshot the Griffins 28-2 for the match and 16-0 in the half. Twenty of their shots were on target. After halftime, the Eagles consistently pushed the attack, applying tremendous pressure to the Gwynedd Mercy midfield and backline. While Eastern spent most of its time in front of the Gwynedd Mercy net, Griffins' goalkeeper Zoe Davis held down the fort, keeping the match scoreless by making 17 saves in the first 84 minutes of the match.
Eastern looked to finally break through off a free kick in the 80th minute as Monforto's delivery bounced off the top woodwork and was punched home by
Tia Argento, but the goal was called back due to an offsides call. In the 84th minute, Zucker had a chance right on the doorstep but failed to put it away, but she got her redemption a few moments later. A great ball over the top from
Ella Sedor was deflected by
Molly Schellpeper towards goal, and Zucker gathered the ball and fired it past Davis to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. It was the first goal of the season for Zucker and the 13th of her career.
Monforto gave the Eagles a little insurance a few minutes later. Off a free kick from almost the exact same part of the field she took her first, this time, the ball bounced over Davis' head and into the top right corner of the net, doubling the Eastern lead and ultimately securing the win.
Faith Leake didn't see much action, but made one save in her 16th career shutout. Argento finished with a team-high seven shots, five of which were on goal, while Zucker finished with four.
Eastern will be back in action home this Wednesday against Lebanon Valley College.
