ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - For the first time in program history, Eastern Men's Tennis earned a win over Stevenson, beating the Mustangs 4-3 in a hard-fought affair. The Eagles earned the doubles point with a tiebreaker win at No. 3 doubles, and they clinched the win with three victories at No. 2, 4, and 6 singles.
Jeffrey Day and
Jared Groff gave the Eagles the advantage in doubles play with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Stevenson knotted it up with a win at No. 1 doubles, but the duo of
Tiger Winston and
Toby Sallee earned a 9-7 win in the tiebreaker to beat Stevenson's Christian Coulson and Nate Kelly 7-6 and claim the doubles point.
The Eagles fell behind, dropping matches at No. 1 and 3 singles, but Day tied it up with a 6-1, 6-7 (7-4) 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. It was Day's sixth win in singles play this year. Groff earned his team-high ninth win of the year at No. 4 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, putting the Eagles ahead 3-2.
The Mustangs took No. 5 singles, tying the match at 3-3. Sallee, however, took care of business at No. 6 singles, closing out the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Eastern will close out the regular season Saturday, weather permitting, against Messiah.
