CHESTER, Pa.—Eastern University Track and Field posted a pair of new program marks and competed well at the Paul Donohue Invitational hosted by Widener University. Eastern's 4x 400 Meter dipped under 3:20 for the first time in program history and
Ryle Mellinger set another program record with a great run in the Steeplechase.
Ryle Mellinger continued to put his name atop the Eastern record books with a program-best 9:20.07 in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. That mark was the top performance by a collegiate athlete at the meet and broke the mark set by Bryton Henry in 2019 by over 20 seconds. last week he set the program standard in the 1500, and he missed the school record in the 5,000 Meters by nine one-hundredths of a second.
Eastern's 4 x400 team capped the night with a 3:19.96.
James Ugorji,
ShaMar Davis,
Robert Walton, and
Christian Scales ran the four loops nearly two-thirds of a second faster than the group that included Ugorji, Davis and Walton did last spring. Walton ran a 1:53.87 for the 800 Meters on Friday evening, and Scales ran a season-best 50.45 in the open 400 Meters. Davis ran a season-best 57.22 in the 400 Meter Hurdles.
Keyon Jones also ran in the 400 Hurdles. His 55.5 is the second-best time in program history. Jones won the 110 High Hurdles into a little bit of headwind.
Jahari Brown continued to impress in the sprints. After a solid 10.95 in the 100 Meters, the rookie from Reistertown, Md. became just the second Eastern athlete to break 22 seconds in the 200 meters. He finished eighth in a field loaded with Division I and Division II athletes. he was third amongst Division III athletes.
In the field,
Lawrence Day and Joshua Harris placed in the high jump, and Eastern's throwers continued to post solid marks.
The Eagles will compete with a limited group at Elizabethtown next weekend to secure qualifying marks and prep for the MAC Championships which will be held at Messiah on 29th, 30th, and 1st.
