GRANTHAM, Pa. - Eastern Baseball, trailing 7-1 after the fourth inning in game one of its doubleheader with Messiah on Saturday, stormed back with eight unanswered runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to take an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the seventh. The Eagles, however, could not hold the lead, and the Falcons walked it off in the bottom of the ninth to win by a score of 9-8.
Trent MacDougall led off the game with his fifth home run of the year, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. MacDougall did not have a home run in his first two seasons, but has shown an increase in power this season. The lead, however, did not last long, as the Falcons answered back with seven unanswered runs, six of which came in the first two innings.
Drew Hurst hit a two-run home run in the second to put the Falcons up 2-1. In the third, Isaiah Parido hit a two-run double to left center, while Landon Mark and Carter Reid hit RBI single to center field, putting the Falcons ahead 6-1. Cristian Reyna added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Eagles began to push back in the fifth, pushing three runs across to cut the lead to 7-4. David Garrido started the scoring with a sacrifice fly, before Thomas Kozlusky and Matthew Gonglik scored on Messiah throwing errors. Garrido delivered again in the sixth inning with a two-run double, and in the seventh, Kozlusky and Luke Meehan gave the Eagles the lead with back-to-back RBI singles.
The Falcons answered again in the bottom of the seventh. Landon Mark led off the inning with a triple and Carter Reid scored him on a single through the left side. The Eagles had the go-ahead run on third in the top of the ninth, but could not cash in, and the Falcons walked it off in the bottom half of the frame on a Matt Luchovick double. Kozlusky, MacDougall, Meehan, and Justin Rodriguez combined for nine hits, five runs scored, and three RBI. Garrido drove in three runs.
Meehan scored the first run of game two on a wild pitch, but the Falcons scored 10 unanswered to earn the series sweep with a 10-1 win. The Falcons hit four home runs in game two and finished with nine round trippers in the three-game series.
Eastern (22-13, 8-10) returns home on Tuesday to take on Lebanon Valley in its final non-conference home game of the season. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
