Baseball Sweeps Rosemont to End Spring Break Week

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Baseball returned to the friendly confines of the Yard on Saturday, improving to 9-3 on the season with a pair of victories over the Rosemont Ravens. First-year Landon Petty pitched a brilliant four innings in his first collegiate start and Eastern used a six-run fourth to claim a 9-0 win over Rosemont in game one. The Eagles went on to score nine runs in the first two innings and used another strong start from Brady Maerz to clinch the doubleheader sweep, 14-2.

Eastern struck first in the bottom of the second inning of game one. With two outs and Matthew Gonglik on third, Thomas Kozlusky hit a single deep in the hole at shortstop and beat out the throw to make it a 1-0 Eastern lead. The Eagles added two more in the third inning. Luke Meehan scored on a wild pitch, and Matt McSorley scored on a subsequent Rosemont throwing error to make it a 3-0 advantage.

The Eagles put the game away with six more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Justin Rodriguez scored on another Rosemont fielding error to begin the scoring for the Eagles. Meehan followed with a two-run single through the right side, scoring both Kozlusky and Trent MacDougall. McSorley scored Robert Del Buono on an RBI groundout, and Jason Gregory capped off the scoring with a two-run single to center field.

After hitting the first two batters he faced, Petty (1-0) was lights out for the remainder of his outing. The first-year pitcher escaped an early jam in the first, surviving runners on second and third with one out, and allowed just three baserunners over his next three innings. He struck out seven batters and allowed just two hits in the win. Peter Mellana and Joseph Juliano combined for three strikeouts and no hits allowed to help secure the shutout victory.

Meehan continued his torrid start at the plate, finishing 1-for-2 with two RBI and a pair of runs scored. McSorley, Gregory, and Kozlusky combined for two runs scored, three hits, and four RBI.

After just four hits in the game one win, the Eastern offense was much more explosive in game two, finishing with nine hits, five of which went for extra bases. Meehan started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring MacDougall, before first-year shortstop Ryan Alfonso score on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Eastern.

The Eagles went on to plate seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. Kozlusky was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and Alfonso hit a sacrifice fly of his own to right field to put the Eagles ahead 4-0. Meehan hit another two-run single, his fourth and fifth RBIs of the day, Trevis Harris followed with a two-run triple, and Justin DiCesare capped off the scoring with a double, his first of two on the day. The senior hit a two-run double two innings later to scored Harris and AJ Sonsini to put the Eagles ahead 11-2.

Eastern tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Leyton Bameberger hit an RBI single to score David Garrido, and Lane Heuer capped off the doubleheader with a two-run double to left center field.

Maerz (2-0) put together another strong appearance for the Eagles in his second start of the season. In four innings, the first-year struck out five and allowed just three hits and two runs. Dylan Labukas, Zachary Alfonso, and Gage Curnane combined for five strikeouts while giving just two hits.

DiCesare and Bamesberger combined for four hits, three runs scored, and four RBI, while Meehan drove in three runs. Harris and Heuer also combined for four runs scored and four RBI.

Eastern (9-3) will be back at the Yard on Tuesday for a single contest against future MAC Commonwealth foe Neumann. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
