Baseball Holds Off Late Rally to Earn Home Win Over Notre Dame

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Baseball scored seven runs in the first five innings and withstood a furious rally to come away with a 10-9 win over the Notre Dame of Maryland Gators on Tuesday afternoon at the Yard. Matt McSorley delivered the clutch pinch hit RBI single in the bottom of the eighth, and Blake Weinstein pitched a solid 1.1 innings in relief to pick up his second win of the year. It is the first time dating back to the early 1990's that the Eagles have been 10 games over .500. Furthermore, the Eagles picked up their 17th win of the spring, matching last season's win total.

The Eagles finished with 13 hits in the win. Thomas Kozlusky finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Luke Meehan finished with two hits, including his fourth home run of the season, and three RBIs. Matthew Gonglik and Justin Rodriguez each collected two hits. Trent MacDougall finished with a hit and an RBI, while Leyton Bamesberger drove in a pair of runs. Zachary Alfonso was also effective on the mound in his third start of the season, giving up just two hits while striking out four.

Eastern (17-7) struck first in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a pair of Notre Dame errors. After David Garrido reached base on a two-out error, Bamesberger drove him home with a single up the middle. Rodriguez doubled the lead with a double to right-center field, plating Bamesberger.

In the third, MacDougall wore a pitch to lead off the inning, before Meehan smoked a baseball over the left-center wall on a 0-1 count to put the Eagles ahead 4-0. Two more runs came home in the fourth on a MacDougall RBI double and a Meehan RBI single, and the Eagles increased their advantage to 7-0 on a Bamesberger sacrifice fly in the fifth.

The Gators came roaring back over the next three innings to eventually tie the game at 9-9. They began their rally with a four-run sixth, cutting the lead to 7-5. Eagles got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the seventh on a double steal and another Notre Dame error, but the Gators used another four-run inning, which included a bases-clearing double from Brennan Deremeik, to knot the game up in the top of the eighth.

Eastern was able to regain its composure in the bottom half of the frame. After singles from Gonglik and Kozluksy put runners on first and second with one out, McSorley swung on the first pitch he saw, roping a single up the middle to scored Gonglik and put the Eagles back ahead for good. Weinstein (2-0) went on to pitch a scoreless ninth recording a pair of flyouts and a strikeout to clinch the win.

The Eagles begin an important conference series against the Stevenson Mustangs on Thursday. First pitch at The Yard is set for 3:30 pm.
