Softball Settles for Split with Albright

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— After cruising to an 8-0 run-shortened win in the opener, Eastern University Softball had to settle for a split as the visiting Albright College Lions scored three times early and held on for a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Emily Trzonkowski was an infield single away from a no-hitter in the opener.

With Trzonkowski striking out five of the first six hitters she faced, the Eagles scored single tallies in each of the first two innings. After Trzonkowski retired the first two hitters in the third, the Lions (8-11, 2-4) picked up their only hit of the game on a single into the hole at short. Eastern's first year ace finished the inning with her seventh strikeout.

After Maura Yoos and Maryanna Nagle singles , the Eagles scored twice on a single from Mackenzie Laub and added another run on single from Hailey Burke at the end of an 11-pitch at bat.

Trzonkowski (8-0) worked around a leadoff error with a strikeout and a double-play in the fourth, and she struck out the first two Lions in the fifth before finishing the inning with a ground ball to short. Trzonkoski struck out ten, did not walk a hitter or allow a ball out of the infield.

The Eagles scored once on a Becca Taylor single in the fourth and added two runs in the fifth to walk off the win. Mackenzie Maki drove in the final run with a ground ball to shortstop. The Eagles scored in every inning and took advantage of four Albright errors.

That offense did not happen in game two. Though the Eagles scored unearned runs in the second and third innings, they were unable to string hits together against Albright starter Gabrielle Weiss.

Albright started the game with the first three batters reaching base. Gia Gordon escaped that jam with only one run scoring. The Eagles started the second inning with a Taylor double and a single from Laub, but they were only able to score an unearned run on a two-out error. Ainsley O'Donnell flied out to deep left-center with the bases loaded to end the rally.

The Lions took the lead for good in the third after a lead off walk and three softly-hit singles turned into two runs.

Yoos and Nagle reached to start the third, but the Eagles needed an error and a sacrifice fly to generate a single tally.

The Eagles put traffic on the bases in the fourth and fifth innings and put the first two runners on in the seventh. With one out and the runners still at first and second Laub punched a shot into the gap in right-center, but Albright's Juliette Licata ran it down and got the throw into the infield before Yoos, who had tagged, could think about scoring from second on the play.

Despite only striking out one time, the Eagles were unable to find success against Weiss, who picked up her fifth win of the season.

Bryn Clifford threw three innings in relief and did not allow a hit, and Trzonkowski pitched a scoreless seventh.

For the Eagles, this is the fourth doubleheader in the last five where they have dropped the second game. They are at Immaculata on Tuesday before returning home for a league doubleheader against Stevenson on Thursday.
