ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - On a beautiful day for baseball at The Yard, Eastern rode another brilliant outing from junior
Brennan Moloughney and a four-run second inning to come away with a 4-0 win over the Hood Blazers in game one of its doubleheader. Moloughney (3-2) threw his second complete game shutout of the season, striking out seven in his third win. The shutout win is the fourth for the Eagles this year, the most in a single season in program history.Â
The junior southpaw allowed six total baserunners and four hits. He did not allow a runner to advance past second base. In now 29.2 innings pitched, Moloughney has a 1.52 ERA and a team-high 30 strikeouts while limiting batters to a .171 batting average.
With Moloughney dealing on the mound, the Eagles (12-7, 2-4) needed just one to give him all the run support he needed.
Thomas Kozlusky began the second with a single, before
Robert Del Buono ate a pitch to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Despite a double play, the Eagles went on to score four runs with two outs in the inning.
Ryan Alfonso scored Del Buono on an RBI single,
Trevor Harris doubled to left field to plate Alfonso, and
Trent MacDougall capped off the scoring with a two-run shot, his third of the season, to make it a 4-0 Eastern lead. After not hitting a single home run in his first two seasons, the junior centerfielder now has three in his last five games.
Hood's (10-10, 5-1) best chance to score came in the third inning as a Rhett Robbins single to right field looked like it would score Sean Seely from second base. However, Harris made a perfect throw to
JJ Matos at home plate, and the sophomore catcher made a perfect tag to end the Hood scoring threat and keep the Blazers off the scoreboard. Moloughney went on to allow just four baserunners the rest of the way to secure Eastern's 12th win of the season.
Kozlusky led the Eastern offense with a pair of hits in three at-bats. MacDougall, Harris, Alfonso, Matos,
Luke Meehan, and Matthew Gongli each finished with a hit.
In game two, the Eagles came up just short in a competitive 5-4, 10-inning loss. The Eagles scored all four of their runs in the first two innings, two on an two-run double from
Matt McSorley in the first frame and two more on a two-run single from MacDougall in the second. The Blazers, however, tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth, before Kamari Chisolm secured the win with an RBI infield single in the 10th frame.
MacDougall was tremendous at the dish in the nightcap, finishing 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Kozlusky and Meehan each finished with a pair of hits.
Eastern will be back at home on Wednesday for a non-conference showdown against Washington College. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
