SWARTHMORE, Pa.— After claiming a thrilling 2-1 win in eight innings to start the doubleheader, Eastern University Softball settled for a split with a darkness-shortened loss in game two at Swarthmore College.
The Eagles needed extra-innings to beat the Garnet and their ace Lily Goldberg in the opener. Swarthmore struck for a run in the first when a lead-off walk and a pair of stolen bases turned into a run on a wild pitch.
The Eagles put runners on each of the four innings and finally tied the score when a two-out double from
Hailey Burke drove in
Mackenzie Laub.
The Garnet had two more base-runners in the fourth inning, but Swarthmore did not pick up their first hit of the game until they knocked a double to lead off the bottom of the seventh. That hit snapped a run of 11 no-hit innings by Eastern starter
Emily Trzonkowski (5-0) Eastern's standout rookie struck out the next hitter but was still in a situation when the Garnet added an infield single and took second to stay out of a force out.
Trzonkowski earned a second out with a strikeout and got a nice catch in right field from Laub to send the game to extras.
The inning started with
Ainsley O'Donnell placed on second. She scored on a one-out double from
Maryanna Nagle, Nagle was out at home on a
Becca Taylor single. Laub then singled with Taylor on second, but the Eastern lead remained at 2-1 when
Sydney Ostolaza flied out.
Trzonkowski retired the side in the eighth to pick up her fifth win of the year.
In the nightcap, the Eagles (9-3) struck first on a
Becca Taylor single. in the first. With temperatures dropping and light fading, Garnet (10-6) scored seven times on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. After the Eagles went quietly in the top of the fifth, the game was called for darkness.
Swarthmore won the Centennial Conference last year and Goldberg was the Division III National Rookie of the Year.
The Eagles will be at Hood College on Saturday for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader. The Blazers made the MAC Commonwealth tournament last year, but have yet to play in the league this spring.
