Women's Basketball Slips at Widener

CHESTER, Pa.— Eastern University Women's Basketball were within five points with two and a half minutes left, but the host Pride scored the final 11 points of the game to pull away with a 70-54 MAC Comonwealth win. Jeriyah Johnson scored 21 points to lead the Eagles in the loss. 

With Adriana Summersett hitting a pair of 3-pointers off the bench, the Eagles (7-13, 2-7) played right with their hosts through the first quarter. Widner forward Giada Palmieri scored a put-back basket in the final minute of the quarter to give the hosts a 14-12 lead after one quarter.

Though Widener (16-4, 7-2) led by as many as 11 in the second quarter, the Eagles got an 8-to-2 burst to close the lead back to five before Palmieri again scored to close the period with Widener up 32-25. Johnson scored 11 of Eastern's 13 points in the second quarter and had 14 at the break. Only three Eagles scored baskets in the first half. Widener, meanwhile had balanced scoring and a 27-25 edge on the glass. 

The Widener lead never grew larger than 12 or smaller than five until the final moments of the game. The Eagles made their free throws to stay in the game despite shooting only 29.6 percent in the second half. Tychelle Gordon was 7-of-8 from the foul line and scored all 13 of her points in the second half. 

Widener made seven free throws in the final two minutes of the game to match the Eagles with 12 second-half points from the line. 

Gordon had seven rebounds to go with her 13 points and Summersett finished with nine points. 

With her 21 today, Johnson moves pas Emily Lavin into sixth place on Eastern's career scoring list. Bekah Rolund '12 is 41 points in front of Johnson in the fifth spot. 

The Eagles will host Stevenson on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
