Baseball Sweeps Penn State York

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Baseball ended its first week of play at The New Yard with a pair of wins over Penn State York on a beautiful Saturday. Eastern rode a strong start from Brennan Moloughney and strong offense down the stretch in a 7-0 win in game one. In the nightcap, after falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, the Eastern offense exploded with 16 hits, scoring in every inning in a 15-3 rout. Brady Maerz earned his first collegiate win in game two with a solid four innings of work.

Penn State York (0-2) looked to strike first in the opener, loading the bases with two outs in the first frame. Moloughney (1-1) escaped the jam, inducing a popup to keep the game scoreless. The junior was lights out from that moment on. After allowing three baserunners in the first inning, Moloughney allowed just one more in his final three innings of work. He finished with seven strikeouts in four innings of work to record his first win of 2026.

After a slow start offensively in game one, the Eagles started to find their feet as the game progressed, finally breaking the scoreless tie in the fourth frame. Helped out by a pair of Lions' errors, the Eagles scored their first run of the game on the second of those miscues. In the fifth, the Eagles increased their lead to 4-0. Leyton Bamesberger started off the frame with a single. A sacrifice bunt from Trent MacDougall moved Bamesberger to second. Bamesberger went on to swipe third, before scoring on Thomas Kozlusky's RBI triple - the first triple in the history of the New Yard. The Eagles tacked on two more runs on a Luke Meehan double and a Matt McSorley single.

In the sixth, the Eagles broke the game open as Matthew Gonglik cleared the bases with a two-out double to left-center field. Owen DeLong, Connor Viola, and Chris Humphreys were perfect in relief for the Eagles, giving up just two hits and three total baserunners in the final three innings of play to combine with Moloughney for the shutout - the first shutout at the New Yard.

Kozlusky, Meehan, Gonglik, McSorely, and Bamesberger each finished with a hit. Meehan was not retired in the opener, finishing with a double and three walks to go along with three runs scored. McSorely knocked in a pair of runs, while Kozlusky scored a pair of runs.

Penn State York did strike first in the second game, plating a pair to go up 2-0, but the Eagles quickly took back control in the bottom half of the frame. Meehan drove home MacDougall on an RBI groundout, and Gonglik tied the game with an RBI single through the left side, his fourth of the day, to plate Robert Del Buono.

After giving up the two runs in the first inning, Maerz (1-0) was brilliant in his final three innings. He struck out in the side in the second, struck out two more batters in the third, and pitched a clean inning to cap off an excellent debut. The Forest Hill, Md. native gave up just four hits, striking out six batters in the win.

The Eagles' offense continued to hum in the nightcap. Meehan gave Eastern the lead for good in the second with an RBI double, scoring Ryan Alfonso, before the Eagles scored three more runs in the third on a JJ Matos RBI single, an Alfonso sacrifice fly, and a MacDougall RBI double. Gonglik knocked in his sixth run o the day in the fourth, before the Eagles took advantage of three Penn State York errors to score six runs in the bottom of the fifth. Three of those runs came on York throwing miscues, David Garrido recorded his first collegiate RBI with a single through the left side, and Justin DiCesare recorded a two-RBI knock to put the Eagles up 13-3. The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on the first career RBIs for first-year Joe Scimone and sophomore AJ Sonsini.

"We started off slower than we wanted in both games, but took better at bats as the games went on," Eastern Head Coach Scott Renauro said." In game one, we hit way too many fly balls which led to easy innings for their pitcher. When we lowered our sight to more hard ground balls and line drives we were able to put more pressure on the defense."

Blake Weinstein, Landen Lewis, and Dylan Labukas were equally as effective in relief in the nightcap, combing for three strikeouts while allowing just one walk and one earned run.

"It was good to see our pitching staff work with their off speed today," Renauro continued. "It's been a focal point for us. Because we have a lot of solid arms in the pen, I feel confident going to another guy each inning as the game gets later. Overall, a very solid day for our guys."

The Eagles (4-2) will travel to the Cal Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for four games over Spring Break. Eastern will begin its 2026 trip with a 2:30 showdown against Houghton University on Tuesday.
