ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— A slow start proved too much to overcome as Eastern Unviersity Baseball lost 13-2 to the visiting Swarthmore College Garnet. The first four batters for the Garnet reached safely and the visitors scored five runs on five hits in the first to build an early lead that they would not relinquish.
The Eagles (1-2) had some hope for a rally when
Jaden Taylor doubled with one out in the bottom of the inning, but the inning ended on a long fly ball from
Luke Meehan.
Starter
Marcelo Llorente showed flashes when he pitched around traffic for a scoreless second, but he could not get around a jam and left with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the third. The Garnet plated all three of those runs to build a 9-0 lead before the Eagles had their second hit.
All Eastern's offense came in the fourth. Meehan hit a lead-off home run to left center for his second extra-base hit of the year. After Thomas Koslusky reached on an error and
Matt McSorley doubled, the Eagles scored a second run on a slow roller to third from
JJ Matos.
With the lopsided score the Eagles made wholesale changes in the field but got scoreless innings in relief from
Landon Petty and
Austin Quark.
When the Eagles went scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, the umpires called the game for darkness. The Garnet (2-2) finished with an 11-4 edge in hits and took advantage of 11 walks and three hit batsmen.
Eastern is back on the field for a single game against Penn State Abington tomorrow and will host Penn State York for a pair of games on Saturday.
