READING, Pa.— After battling top-seeded Hood to a close game on the road last Saturday, Eastern University Men's Basketball came up on the short-side of a lopsided game at Alvernia. The Golden Wolves (10-5, 4-3) shot 57 percent from the floor with six made 3-pointers on the way to a 48-33 halftime lead, and they made 13-of-14 from the line the second half to pull away to an 89-64 win. The Eagles (6-12, 3-4) shot 52 percent in the first half, but were only 7-of-31 from the floor after the break. Dujuan Taylor finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds and
Mason Lewis added 11.
In the history of Eastern Basketball, Jack McCloskey Court has rarely been a welcome site for Eastern's shooters. The two teams were tied at 14 before the Golden Wolves hit five-straight shots in a two-minute stretch to go up 26-14. Unable to force turnovers, the Eagles saw the deficit ratchet up as the first half progressed.
Justin Ezeukwu hit a 3-pointer off the bench to close the gap to 10 with five minutes to play int he half, and the Eagles answered a pair of Alvernia free throws with two free throws from Taylor and back-to-back baskets from Sherman to close the gap to seven at 38-31. A 10-to-2 run, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer gave Alvernia their comfortable cushion at halftime.
Though they scored the first four points of the second half, the Eagles were never able to close the gap to single digits as the hosts shot just under 50 percent from the floor, did not turn the ball over and made 13-of-14 from the line.
On the strength of 11 offensive rebounds, the Eagles finished with a. 36-33 edge on the glass.
The loss drops Eastern into the bottom half of the MAC Commonwealth table at the mid-point of the season. They will start the second half with a 1:00 pm game at Albright on Saturday. The Lions (8-9, 4-2) have wins over York and Alvernia and will play at Stevenson tomorrow. Eastern earned an 87-68 win when the two teams met early in the month.
