FREDERICK, Md.– Eastern University Women's Basketball scored the first 11 points of overtime to pull away from the host Hood College Blazers for a 68-59 MAC Commonwealth win.
Jeriyah Johnson made 10-of-12 from the line to lead the Eagles with 18 points.
The Eagles led for the bulk of the game, but the Blazers tied the game on a late 3-pointer to force overtime. In the extra frame, the Eagles kept things together on defense after
Sophia Vera and
Madeline Wylie made inside baskets. The Eagles built their lead from the foul line as the Blazers could not find the range in extra time. Hood finally scored with 20 seconds to play.
The Eagles (6-11, 1-5) shot well to start the game and led 14-4 after only four minutes. Johnson was the last of the five Eastern starters to score.
Damiyae Moyet opened the scoring with a basket and added a 3-pointer in the stretch as the Eagles recorded assists on five of their first six baskets.
The Blazers (3-14, 0-6) closed the gap to 14-9 with a basket and three free throws before
Sophia Vera stopped the run with a 3-pointer. The Eagles made 9-of-13 from the floor and led 21-15 at the first quarter break.
The Eagles stayed ahead through the second quarter and went to the locker room up 30-26 after Adrianna Summersett made a pair of free throws at the buzzer.
The Blazers led briefly three different times in the third quarter, but Vera and
Ariyana Hester made lay-ups late for a 42-40 lead going to the final quarter.
The Blazers led 49-48 with four minutes left. Johnson found Vera on a nifty back-door cut for a reverse lay-up. Vera then pushed the lead to three with a strip and score basket. The Eagles, who finished the game 15-of-26 from the line, made enough free throws to stay ahead, but not enough to pull away.
Vera finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Wylie had 13 points and nine rebounds. Hester had 11 points. Johnson added six points and only one turnover to her game-high honors.
The Eagles are slated to host Alvernia on Wednesday evening.
