ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– Eastern University Field Hockey pulled away late to earn a 5-2 non-league win over the visiting Arcadia University Knights.
Karlee Howard and
CJ Summa each scored twice and
Morgan Unruh added a single tally to give the Eagles their first win over Arcadia since 2017.
The Eagles (2-1) scored off a penalty corner in the second minute to grab control of the game early.
Kara Frantz found Howard in the circle, and the junior forward did the rest. She spun away from a pair of defenders and knifed a reverse stick effort into a low corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles had five first-quarter penalty corners and an 8-1 edge in shots, but the opening 15 minutes ended with Eastern holding just a 1-0 lead. The Eastern back row of
Paige Brouse, Neveah Greene, and Kasey Agnew kept the Knight's transition play away from the circle and helped start the Eastern attack.
Less than four minutes into the second, Summa tapped in a shot from close range for her second of the year. Howard earned the circle on the right side and angled a pass toward the back post, Unruh tipped it through a defender's legs and Summa did the rest.
The Knights found some answers at halftime, and they had more possession and better field position. Halfway through the frame, they cut the lead in half on a nicely worked goal on their only penalty corner of the period.
The Eagles answered with three penalty corner chances but could not reestablish a two-goal edge until Frantz found Howard in space for another reverse-stick effort.
Halfway through the fourth, the Knights again drew within a goal on another penalty-corner strike. Arcadia had a chance to tie with less than five minutes to play, but
Angelina Catania stood her ground with a save and
Braeley DiGregorio came up with a big interception at the edge of the circle. Catania finished the game with five saves and several other strong plays off her line.
The Eagles took advantage of the possession and the space left behind Arcadia's attack. First-year midfielder
Cameron Brancato found Unruh in space for a 4-2 lead with two and half minutes left.
With Arcadia throwing even more numbers forward, Summa knocked in an insurance goal off a long feed from
Jenna Reider for the final score. The Eagles finished with a 21-7 edge in shtos and an 11-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The win is the first against Arcadia since a 1-0 overtime win in Glenside in 2017. That victory was the 18th straight win in a series that dates back to1966. Arcadia and Eastern are two of the four schools that have competed on both sides of the MAC since 2008. When Eastern switched from the MAC Freedom to the MAC Commonwealth for 2020-21, Arcadia went the other way. From 1993-2006, both Eastern and Arcadia were members of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.
Eastern Field Hockey is back in action at Delaware Valley on Wednesday.
