Volleyball Stopped at Widener

CHESTER, Pa.— In the MAC Commonwealth opener for both teams, Eastern University Women's Volleyball dropped a four-set decision at Widener. The host Pride (5-9, 1-0) limited errors and was able to pull away to decisive wins in the final two sets.

The Eagles (8-4, 0-1) got 19 kills from Alexis Standford and 16 from Hannah Pringle, but they struggled to build runs for any extended amount of time. The Eagles had multiple set points at 24-22 in the first set, but three hitting errors, a bad set, and a service error gave the hosts a 27-25 win to go up 1-0.

The Eagles tied the match with a 25-27 second-set win, but Widener rallied from  a 13-8 deficit to win the critical third set 25-21. The Eagles hit a very respectable .242 in the frame, but the Pride capitalized on five service aces to go up 2-1.

The Eagles led 8-3 in the fourth and seemed to be on track to forcing a fifth, but the Pride took the lead for good at 14-13 and pulled away to a 25-17 win. Widener had only nine kills in claiming the fourth set. The Eagles had 11 hitting errors, two serving errors, and two receiving errors.

"It was definitely a disappointing loss coming off a good weekend," Head Coach Mark Birtwistle said of the game. "Widener played better and deserved to win. We have some things to continue to work on and we will. "

Widener had not beaten Eastern since 2007.
