Men's Soccer Posts Six on Pitt Greensburg

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. — Eastern University Men's Soccer came into today's home test against Pitt Greensburg (3-4-1) needing to find some creative energy after a 0-0 midweek draw that featured solid defensive commitment  but lacked attacking conviction. The Eagles created chances in each half and pulled away to a 6-0 win. Joåo Tarabal and Zach Sievert each scored twice and the Eagles extended their clean sheet streak to three matches.

The Eagles (2-3-1) created chances early, but they did not break through until the Tarabal finished a great move with a tap-in after a great move up the right side. Sievert played Evan Cope into space behind the Bobcat back row. Cope's early touches were good. He earned the box and drew the goalkeeper to the nearside before slipping a perfect pass to an open Tarabal at the back post.

Moments later, it looked like Tarabal doubled the Eastern lead, but he was inches offside on the entry pass from Sievert. After more action, the Eagles finally stretched the lead on a goal from Cope in the 38th minute.  Mauro Lence set up the chance. The first-year winger bent a long pass into Tarabal in the middle of the box. Tarabal returned the favor with a sweet pass that Cope hammered home.

Though his side was up 2-0, head Coach Luca Mellor was not pleased with his side at the break. He challenged his group to up the pressure and find more energy and commitment.

Sievert answered the bell immediately. The junior captain from Jacksonville pressed a back pass and redirected a clearing effort from the Bobcat goalkeeper into the goal for a 3-0 lead 12 seconds into the second half. Two minutes later, Sievert made it 4-0 with a right-footed shot from the edge of the box after a clever heel pass from Haroon Husseini.

With four goals in the bank, the Eagles committed to maintaining both an attacking posture and a shutout. Two first-year players combined for a goal in the 80th minute. Lence came off the left wing and bent a shot toward the back post that was heading wide. Camden Jones met it with a clean header to tally his first collegiate goal.

Less than a minute later, Tarabal finished the scoring. after a nice move through the middle of the field, Tyler Truex earned the box with a dribble. He slipped a well-weighted pass into space. Eastern's Braxzialian forward took the pass and a few extra touches to get the goalkeeper to commit before scooping a shot into the top of the net for his fourth of the year.

Ty Bleiler made three stops in 80 minutes and Will Schade completed the shutout. The Eagles finished with a 28-6 edge in shots.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday with a home game against Penn State Berks.
