Football Cannot Hold Off LVC Rally in 24-21 Loss

ANNVILLE, Pa.— Eastern University Football (2-1, 1-1) dominated early, but a late charge from the host Lebanon Valley Dutchmen erased a 21-7 third-quarter deficit and produced a late drive for a last-second field goal and 24-21 win. The Eagles (2-1) got another 113 rushing yards from Jeremiah Avrilien and a long touchdown reception from Eddie Swinton, but a pair of first-half turnovers and an inability to sustain a drive in the fourth quarter cost the Eagles as the Dutchmen scored early in the fourth to tie the game and sustained a 14-play drive for the winning field goal.

After the Dutchmen (2-1, 2-0) missed a 46-yard field goal attempt on their opening possession, the Eagles marched down the field with efficient and balanced offense. With Sabor Stevens under center, Eastern ran five times and threw four times to get into the red zone at the LVC seven. Stevens' fifth pass, however, found an LVC defender who ran the ball out of the endzone.

After the Eastern defense stood its ground and forced a punt, the Eagles ran seven straight times for a touchdown. Curtis Johnson capped the drive with a 17-yard run for his first touchdown of the year.

While LVC advanced the ball to close out the first quarter and open the second, the Eagles' defense forced a turnover on downs. After losing four yards on the first two plays of the drive, the Eagles were behind the sticks and tried to throw a swing pass to the left. The pass never made it to its target as an LVC defender jumped the route and ran it in for a 27-yard return. In their win over FDU last week, the Dutchmen returned two interceptions and a blocked punt for scores.

The Eagles got up and mounted another drive. With Brett Nabb taking snaps, the Eagles ran the first seven plays and pushed the ball to the LVC 36 year line. With LVC loading the box, the Eagles got a completion to Curtis Johnson for seven yards and a big 28-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Swinton for the lead.

Both teams got the ball twice more in the second quarter, but neither team took big risks and the Eagles took a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

Eastern started the second half with a seven-minute 12-play march for a touchdown. Justin Nikolopolous ran the ball in for a score.

When John Nolek put the ball in deep on the ensuing kickoff inside the ten year line, things were looking good for the Eagles. On third-and-2, LVC quarterback Logan Klitsch changed the game with a 63-yard scamper to flip the field and put the Dutchmen in scoring range. Six plays later, Klitsch scored from three yards out to close the gap to a single score.

Over its final three drives, the Eastern offense was only able to net 23 total yards. LVC tied the game on a six-play drive early in the fourth and took possession at midfield with 3:26 on the clock. The Eastern defense forced a fourth-and-2 play at the 40, but the Dutchmen converted and marched closer to the goal. The hosts called a timeout with three seconds to set up a 22-yard field goal.

The Eastern quarterbacks completed 10-of-12 passes for 114 yards, and the team rushed for 202 total yards. Klitsch threw for 170 and ran for 104 to lead LVC.

LVC has won all three games in the series.

The Eagles travel to King's next weekend to take on the defending MAC Champion Monarchs. King's picked up a 27-21 home win over FDU in a Saturday that saw Albright lose 35-28 to Delaware Valley and Misericordia win 21-7 at Widener.
