CENTER VALLEY, Pa.— Eastern University Women's Volleyball (3-0) won a pair of matches to sweep the weekend at the DeSales University Invitational. The young Eastern squad swept Muhlenberg College (2-1) in the opening match and earned their first true road win against the tournament host Bulldogs in the final game of the weekend. In the win over Muhlenberg, Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle picked up his 850th career win for Eastern.
Hannah Pringle and
Alexis Standford led the Eastern offense. Standford, a junior transfer, had 20 kills and 18 digs in the two matches. She has been very involved in serve receive and is averaging over three digs and three kills per set for her first three matches. Pringle had 27 kills and hit .371 for the day.
After playing against Muhlenberg in the early afternoon, the Eagles had to bounce back for a tough opening set against the hosts. Neither team led by more than two points until the Eagles went up 24-21 in the opening set.
Sarah Furey put away the final ball to secure the 25-23 win.
Viviana Fragoso and Standford each had six digs in the opening. Pringle had six kills on seven swings.
In the second set, the Eagles built a 13-5 lead on serving runs from
Grace Cooper and
Veronica Faber. Despite not hitting for a big number, they carried that lead to the finish for a 25-17 win. Furey and Fragoso each had two aces as the Eagles scored six times without the ball coming back over the net. Cooper and Standford each had four digs.
Up 2-0, the Eagles cruised to a 25-13 win in the final set. Standford put away all five of her attacks and Fragoso added seven more digs. The senior from California finished the day with 29 digs. With her totals from the weekend, Pringle has 1119 for her career and moves past former teammate
Logan Martin and 2006 graduate Jacey Bray to move into the eleventh spot on Eastern's list.
Eastern hit .288 in the three-set win over the Mules. Muhlenberg had just two leads, at 2-1 and 14-13 in the second set.
The Eastern offense got more efficient in each set as the opening match progressed. The Eagles hit .243 in the first set, .293 in the second, and .346 in the third.
Birtwistle gave credit to Fragoso for her role in a serve receive that allowed the offense to get going, and also pointed to the work done by Faber on defense. The first-year from Boca Raton had six blocks on the day. On the right side,
Josie Arezina had six kills in each of her three matches. Furey had 34 assists and
Taylor Stone had 25.
"It was a solid overall effort this weekend," BIrtwistle said. "It was our first back to back matches so we did a nice job staying focused and executed well. The two days off are well-earned."
The Eagles are at Lancaster Bible on the Thursday and will travel to Catholic University for a tri-match next Saturday.
