ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Flag Football remained red hot on Tuesday night at the EU Auxiliary Field, coming away with a 12-0 victory over the UDel Blue Hens. It was the Eagles' eighth win of the season, their eighth in the last nine games, and their seventh victory via shutout in in their inaugural season. Eastern scored an offensive and defensive touchdown in the opening half, and the Eagles' defense remained stalwart in another shutout performance.
As has been the case throughout most of the spring, it was the Eastern defense that set the tone. On the Blue Hens' first drive of the game, junior
Jeriyah Johnson picked off a Kayla Comizio pass near midfield and raced untouched into the end zone for a 44-yard pick six. It's the third pick six for the Eagles at home this season.
Eastern scored its second touchdown on the opening drive of the second quarter. First-year
Kira Green dissected the UDel defense through the air, eventually capping off the possession with a three-yard touchdown pass to
Stephanie White. It was the fourth touchdown for White in Eastern's last three games. Green finished 18-of-23 for 157 yards through the air.
From that moment on, the Eastern defense continued to shine.
Trinity Upton recorded an interception in the second half, and despite some nice offensive plays from UDel, the Eastern defense was up to every challenge, forcing three turnovers on downs after halftime.
Johnson led the Eagles' receiving core with eight receptions for 67 yards, while the returning
Kyla Massenburg finished with four receptions for 48 yards. White made play after play on defense, leading the team with nine tackles and a pair of sacks, while Massenburg ended up with six tackles and a sack.
Eastern (8-3) returns to conference play on Friday with a pair of games at Centenary University. The Eagles will face off against the Neumann Knights at 12 noon followed by the Cyclones at 1:00 pm.
