ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In the final regular season match of the year, Eastern University Men's Volleyball fought off four match points, but the visiting Arcadia University Knights scrambled their way to a 29-27 win in the third and a three-set MAC Commonwealth win on Eastern's senior night. The Eastern program honored seniors
Max Bushong,
Max Bagileo, and
Josiah Cash before the game. The trio played a vital part in helping this year's team to a program-record 15-win season.
The third set went point-for-point nearly the entire way. The two squads were within two points of each other from 4-2. The Eagles went up 21-19 and forced an Arcadia timeout on a thunderous kill from Cash. The Eastern edge disappeared when the Knights got tow big blocks and a hitting error to go up 24-22.
Kaodi Wokocha hit off hands for a sideout to fend off a first match point, but the Eagles still needed to find a point on serve to extend the match. Sophomore-right side
Connor Tucholski served well and first-years
Ronan Landis and
Colby Arvesen closed up a big double-block to tie the score. Tucholski served for another point to give the Eagles a chance to close out, but the Knights found a sideout to tie the score at 25.
Arcadia used another block to earn a third match point, but Wokocha again earned a kill to tie the score at 26. With Wokocha serving Arvesen then just barely missed the court with a swing and the Eagles faced yet another match point. Bagileo put away his seventh kill of the match and 531st of his career to tie the score at 27. Arcadia's Danny Gonzalez put away the final two kills of the match to secure the victory and a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament for the Knights.
Eastern came into this evening needing to sweep Arcadia or have Widener lose at King's. Even though King's won the opening set in Wilkes-Barre, once Arcadia won the first. set 25-19, Eastern's post-season hopes took a big hit. Both teams had 12 kills in the first set, but the Knights had a 4-2 edge in blocks, which proved to be the difference. Wokocha had five kills on seven swings and five digs in the first, but it was not enough to overcome Arcadia' balanced attack.
The Knights hit .375 with 19 kills in winning the second set 25-18. Bushong did all he could. Eastern's senior libero had eight of his 11 digs in the set, but the Knights only missed the court twice on 40 swings. Bagileo had three kills in the frame, but the Eagles were on defense throughout.
With his 11 kills tonight, Wokocha extends his single-season kill record to 291. He added ten digs for his fifth double-double of the season.
Bagileo played in 88 matches in his Eastern career and finishes 94 blocks to go with his 531 kills. He played both as a middle and as an opposite in his career. Cash played in 77 matches and finishes with 440 kills and 203 blocks. Bushong, who is graduating in three years, had a carer-best 172 digs this season. He finishes his career with 460 total digs.
The trio of graduating players each played a part in the progress of Eastern Men's Volleyball over the last four seasons. This year's 15-13 season is the first full season with a winning record in program history.
With the win tonight, Arcadia (10-18, 4-4) secures the fifth spot in the MAC Commonwealth Tournament. The Knights will play at Stevenson to open the Tournament.
