Softball Collects Two More Wins on Third Day of Spring Break

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Eastern Softball recorded another pair of strong wins in a pair of Tuesday morning games on its third day of Spring Break. The Eagles (5-1) used a four-run third inning and stout outings from Danika Barthol and Bryn Clifford to come away with a 5-1 win over Heidelberg in game one. Jania Long and Annaleise McCubbin combined for a three-hit shutout, and the Eagles scored four runs in the third inning en route to a 7-0 victory over the Elizabethtown Blue Jays in game two.

In 14 innings, Barthol, Clifford, Long, and McCubbin gave up just eight hits as a staff, while recording 11 strikeouts and allowing only one run. First-year Emily Kurth continued her torrid start at the dish with four RBIs across both contests. In six games, Kurth is batting .333 with six hits, including one triple, and a team-leading five RBIs.

Barthol recorded two of her five strikeouts in the first inning against Heidelberg (2-1), and the Eagles went right to work in the home half of the frame. With two outs, Kurth hit her first RBI of the day, a single to left field, to score fellow first-year Maura Yoos and give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.

After two more nearly flawless innings from Barthol in the circle, Eastern used two hits and a pair of Heidelberg errors to increase its advantage to 5-0. Sophia Vento and Alyssa Binczak reached on a single and a fielders choice to put runners on first base to lead off the inning. Yoos followed with her second RBI in as many games with a single to left field to score Vento. Kurth hit her second RBI of the day, a groundout to second base, to plate Binczak, before Yoos scored on Elizabethtown's second fielding miscue of the frame. Sydney Ostolaza capped off the Eastern scoring with an RBI fielders choice, scoring Mackenzie Laub to put Eastern ahead 5-0.

Barthol (2-0) pitched a perfect fourth, before Clifford relieved her in the fifth. Heidelberg broke the shutout bid in the sixth with a run on a sacrifice fly, but would not get any closer. In the final three innings, Clifford gave up just one run with a strikeout, five flyouts, and three groundouts for her second save of the spring.

After two scoreless innings to begin the contest against Elizabethtown (1-4), the Eastern offense exploded for four runs in the top of the third inning. Binczak led off the frame with a double, Yoos singled, and Laub walked to lead the bases. As she did in the opener, Kurth opened the scoring with a two-run single, plating Binczak and Yoos for a 2-0 Eastern lead. Sophomore Dakota Owen, who finished 3-for-4 in the contest, hit an infield RBI single to make it 3-0, before Rollins worked a bases-loaded walk to put the Eagles up four.

The Eagles added two more runs in the sixth inning. Madisyn Saposnek hit a sacrifice fly to score Owen, and Kacie Noonan scored on an Elizabethtown fielding error to put the Eagles ahead 6-0. Regina Bangcoro scored in the seventh on a fielders choice to help secure the Eagles' fifth win of Spring Break.

After Long (2-0) pitched five strong innings with three strikeouts and just two hits allowed, McCubbin, pitching for the second straight day, was equally as effective. The West Chester native gave up just one hit in the final two frames, and worked around two Elizabethtown runners in the final inning to close out Eastern's shutout victory.

Along with Owen's three hits, Kurth, Rollins, Binczak, Yoos, and Ostolaza each finished with one knock apiece.

Eastern will be off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday evening. The Eagles will face off against Saint Mary's (Minn.) at 4:15 pm followed by Benedictine at 6:30 pm.
