Long Walkoff Caps Thrilling Doubleheader Sweep of York

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Eastern Softball delivered a thrilling doubleheader sweep on Saturday, securing its first sweep of the York College Spartans since 2015 with 11-7 and 4-1 victories. With the wins, the Eagles (15-3, 4-0) remained perfect in conference play, took a two-game lead over York (5-11, 2-2) in the standings, and continued their recent success against the Spartans. Eastern has won four of its last five match-ups over York, including last May's MAC Commonwealth Championship game at Penn Park in Philadelphia.

Jania Long put on a pitching clinic in game two, before launching a dramatic three-run, walk-off home run in the seventh to complete the sweep. Tori Hook set the tone in the opener with a clutch three-run double in the third inning, capping off Eastern's seven-run explosion. The Eagles are now tied atop the MAC Commonwealth standings with Messiah, who swept Albright on Saturday.

The nightcap turned into a tense pitcher's duel, with both Long and Barstad going toe-to-toe for the entirety of the contest. Eastern struck first in the opening frame when York's second baseman dropped a routine popup, allowing Ainsley O'Donnell to score.

Long controlled the game from the circle, retiring the side in order in the second and third innings and stranding the bases loaded in the fourth after York's only run crossed on an bases-loaded walk following an Eastern throwing error. With the game tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles needed one last spark—and Long delivered.

Emily Kurth started the rally with a one-out single, and with two outs, a dropped fly ball by York's right fielder put runners on the corners. Long wasted no time punishing the mistake, crushing a towering three-run, walk-off home run, her first of the season, over the right field wall. It was her 99th career hit and the perfect exclamation point on a crucial sweep.

Long (7-1) earned her seventh win of the season in the circle, giving up just three hits and one run with three strikeouts on 98 pitches.

Eastern's discipline at the plate paid off in a big way in game one, as the Eagles worked 14 walks and scored six of their 11 runs via bases-loaded walks or hit-by-pitches. Despite collecting just five hits, Eastern made every plate appearance count.

After York struck first with an RBI double from reigning MAC Commonwealth Player of the Year Emma Wade, Eastern responded immediately. The Eagles sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, drawing multiple walks and hit by pitches to push three runs across. Kurth's RBI hit-by-pitch brought in the first run, Hook's groundout plated another, and Sydney Ostolaza's RBI hit-by-pitch, the second of the inning, gave Eastern a 3-1 lead.

Wade's two-run homer in the third tied the game at 3-3, but Eastern answered with a massive seven-run frame. O'Donnell's bases-loaded walk gave the Eagles a lead they wouldn't surrender. Alyssa Binczak followed with an RBI single, and after another bases-loaded walk and a York throwing error, Hook stepped up and delivered the decisive blow – a bases-clearing double to left center that made it 10-3. Hook finished with four RBIs in the contest to lead the Eagles.

York threatened in the fourth with a three-run homer from Gretchen Barstad, but Danika Barthol (6-1) shut the door, tossing three straight scoreless innings to secure the victory. Eastern tacked on a final insurance run with yet another bases-loaded walk, this time to O'Donnell. The sophomore center fielder walked in all five of her plate appearances, scoring and driving in a pair of runs.

Eastern travels to New Jersey on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader against nationally ranked Rowan. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
