ASTON, Pa. - It was another night of historic firsts for Eastern Women's Flag Football on Saturday night as the Eagles won its first two games in program history - a 34-0 shutout over Penn State Schuylkill and a 14-12 victory over Neumann. Along with recording their first ever wins, the Eagles also recorded their first shutout with their victory over the Lions.
In the opener, the Eagles compiled 247 yards of total offense, and scored 27 second half points to win its first-ever game in style.
Kira Green completed eight passes for 155 and a pair of touchdowns, while
Stephanie White ran for a pair of touchdowns on five carries.
Jeriyah Johnson led the receiving core with five receptions for 109 yards and a touchdown. First-year
Kyla Massenburg also scored a receiving touchdown against Penn State.
Massenburg opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown pass from Green midway through the second quarter. Johnson opened the second half with a 64-yard touchdown reception to put the Eagles up 14-0, and White's first rushing score pushed the Eastern lead to 20. White and Morgan scored two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure the shutout victory.Â
The Eastern defense was stellar in the opener, holding the Lions to just 87 total yards. Massenburg and
Dominique Geiger led the Eagles with five tackles apiece, while
Sanej Tyler finished with four. Owen and
Keiyonna Trowery each recorded interceptions, while Massenburg finished with sack.Â
Against the Knights, the Eagles (2-2) scored a pair of touchdowns in the first half and held that lead the rest of the way. Eastern forced a turnover on Neumann's first possession, and Massenburg put the Eagles on the board four plays later. Green converted a 19-yard pass to Johnson on 3rd-and-3, and on the following play, Massenburg scampered 36 yards for the score.
The Eagles' defense came up strong again, forcing a punt on the next Neumann possession, and increased their lead to 14-0 on a five-play, 40-yard drive. Green connected with
Damiyae Moyet on a 16-yard pass to the Neumann 24-yard line, and
Stephanie White put the Eagles just outside of the end zone with a 11-yard run on 2nd-and-7. Green punched it in two plays later, and Eastern converted the extra point to go up 14-0. The Knights pulled to within one possession late in the second quarter, and the Eagles took a 14-6 lead into halftime.
The Knights added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Eastern defense held down the stretch to secure their second win of the night. Massenburg led the Eagles with six tackles and a pair of sacks on defense. Green finished 6-for-13 for 97 yards through the air, while Massenburg carried the ball six times for 55 yards and a score. Johnson finished with four receptions for 71 yards.
Eastern will play against Penn State Schuylkill again this coming Monday. The game is set to begin at 5:00 pm.
