ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Softball recorded a pair of dominant outings in its home and conference opener on Saturday afternoon with a pair of 13-1, run-rule wins over the Widener Pride. The Eagles smashed a remarkable 30 hits over the course of both contests, 13 of which went for extra bases. Senior first baseman
Tori Hook was the catalyst with six hits in six at-bats, six runs scored, seven RBIs, two doubles, and a pair of home runs in the doubleheader sweep.
Danika Barthol (4-1) earned the win in game one, allowing just one run with eight strikeouts on 56 pitches.
Jania Long (6-0) remained perfect on the season with a win in game two, pitching four innings and recording three strikeouts.
Barthol set the tone, striking out five of the first six batters she faced, and Hook got the offense going in the bottom of the second. The Willow Street native led off the frame with her second home run of her season to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Widener tied it up in the top of the third on an RBI single from Samantha McCarthy, but the Eastern offense exploded for 12 straight runs, batting around twice in a row, in the next two innings.
The Eagles scored seven runs on eight hits in the bottom of the third.
Maura Yoos started off the frame with a single and a stolen base, and an
Ainsley O'Donnell single advanced her to third base. Yoos later gave the Eagles the lead for good, scoring on a pickoff attempt by Widener. Doubles by
Mackenzie Laub and
Sydney Ostolaza, along with another RBI from Hook, put the ahead 5-1.
Sophie Rollins followed with a two-run single to make it 7-1, and a Yoos RBI double capped off the inning and increased Eastern's advantage to seven. Laub finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs in the opener, while Yoos went 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Eastern tacked on five more runs in the fourth. O'Donnell doubled down the third base line to kick off the frame, and four straight hits from Laub,
Emily Kurth, Hook, and Barthol, the latter two being doubles, increased the Eastern advantage to 12-1. Rollins knocked in her third run of the afternoon with an RBI single up the middle to score
Bryn Clifford. Barthol and Rollins each finished 2-for-3 and combined for four runs batted in.
Hook and Kurth led the Eagles in game two, combining for six hits, six runs scored, six RBIs, and three extra base hits. Eastern scored four runs in the bottom of the first, courtesy of a two-run single from Kurth, an RBI double from Hook, and a Widener fielding error on a deep fly ball from Ostolaza.
After Kurth led off the third frame with a double, Hook hit her second home run of the day to the exact same part of the field as her first, putting the Eagles ahead 6-0.
Dakota Owen later made it 7-0 on an RBI fielders choice.
The Eastern offense continued to rake in the bottom of the fourth. Hook,
Maeve Colligan, and O'Donnell hit an RBI single, and Ostolaza highlighted the inning with a bases-clearing double to right-center, giving the Eagles their second straight 13-1 lead. O'Donnell and Ostolaza combined for four hits, three runs scored, and four RBIs in game two.
Clifford, after closing out game one, followed with another excellent relief outing in game two, recording back-to-back strikeouts to seal the deal and secure Eastern's second straight doubleheader sweep.
Eastern will be back at The Softball Field on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader against Swarthmore College. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
