ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– In the first meeting between the two programs since 2009, Eastern University Men's Lacrosse beat the Neumann University Knights, 24-5. Led by six goals from
Brett Williamson, nine different Eagles scored in the win.
Though they lost the first two faceoffs, the Eagles (4-4) scored three times in the opening three and a half minutes.
Christopher Fanelli picked up assists on each of the three tallies. He set up his brother
Frankie Fanelli for the first, then fed
Gavin Stark for a behind-the-back effort before flipping an extra pass to Frankie after
Benjamin Souder won the faceoff after Stark's goal.
Neumann's Brendan Boschi stopped the run with his 28th tally of the year. Boschi wound up with three goals on the day, but he did not complete his hat trick until late in the fourth quarter.
Sean Dendall led the Eastern efforts to keep Boschi in good spaces where goalies could make saves. Zach Klym,
Ben Connolly, and
Brendan Kirn each turned away efforts from the Neumann Standout. Klym finished with nine stops, and Connolly and Kirn each stopped five.
Christopher Fanelli made it 4-1 with a behind-the-back effort of his own after forcing a turnover and picking up a ground ball in the ride. He finished with three caused turnovers and seven ground balls.
Brennan Kaut and
Brett Gougler scored Eastern's final two goals of the quarter. The damage could have been much worse, but Neumann goalie Owen Avelar made ten first-quarter saves.
The first six Eastern goals of the second quarter were scored by a guy named Williamson. Brett tucked in five of those, with Ryan scoring from
Christopher Fanelli to make it 9-3. The only goal in the bunch that did not come after an assist was Brett's fifth.
Frankie Fanelli forced a turnover and Williamson tucked the shot into an open goal. The Eastern lead grew to 15-3 at halftime on goals from
Nick Litzenberger,
Frankie Fanelli, and Ryan WIlliamson. Eastern converted nine-of-15 shots into goals in the period.
Though the Knights had the advantage at the x through the game, the Eagles found joy in the ride. Neumann was successful on only 11-of-25 clearing attempts.
Including three extra-man goals, Eastern tacked on eight more goals in the third quarter. All eight goals in the period came with assists.
Min Lee put away the final Eastern goal with a solo effort in the fourth quarter.
The Eastern man-down unit was put to the test for an extended period in the fourth. Even down a player for three and a half minutes, the Eagles held their ground and did not allow a goal. The Eastern man-up group scored on all three of its chances.
Eastern is back in action on Wednesday at Stockton University. The Ospreys won last year's meeting 10-8 and have won three straight in the series.
