LANCASTER, Pa.– In the team's final non-league doubleheader of the year, Eastern University Men's Volleyball (13-8) dropped a pair of matches to quality opponents at Lancaster Bible. The Eagles claimed the third set in a four-set loss to the hosts and were swept by the unbeaten and No. 2 ranked Southern Virginia Knights.
Kaodi Wokocha led the Eagles in both matches. The first-year outside hitter posted 12 kills against Lancaster Bible and eight against SVU.
Josiah Cash had eight blocks against Lancaster Bible.
After dropping the first two sets to Lancaster Bible, the Eagles pulled ahead late in the third to win 25-28. The Eagles scored three-straight points with
Ronan Landis at the service line to go up 14-11. Colby Arvresen and Wokocha combined on a block for the first point, and
Connor Tucholski delivered a solo block for the second. After the teams traded sideouts, Avresen served for three more points.
Symir Byrd delivered a kill fo the 17-13 lead, and after an LBC error, Byrd and
Josiah Cash each combined on a block to stretch the Eastern lead to six.
Kino Tuitupou delivered an ace for the final point of the set. Wokocha and Byrd each had three kills in the set, and Cash had five blocks.
The Chargers (11-5) led 20-14 in the fourth before a three-point run with Byrd at the service line brought the Eagles to within two. The Eagles kept the gap there with solid service return, but they were unable to close the gap and lost 25-22. Landis had 15 assists and
Josh Hrabosky had 13.
Max Bushong finished with nine digs.
Southern Virginia (15-0) came into today's matches without having dropped a set. Their deep roster and experienced roster features sizes and multiple older players.
The Knights hit .375 in the game and had the Eagles on their heels with powerful serving. SVU finished the match with 12 aces. After dropping the first two sets 25-10, and 25-16, the Eagles found their feet and hit a very solid .286 in the third set. To create chances to score and grab a set, the Eastern servers had to be very aggressive. The Knights handled the Eastern serve and were successful on 15-of-17 sideout chances.
The Eastern players will have some time off for spring break before returning for the bulk of the MAC season. Eastern's first game back is against No. 16 Misericordia on March 12.
