Men's Volleyball Wins Twice at Grove City

GROVE CITY, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Volleyball finished its road trip with a pair of wins over teams from the western side of the state. Led by a career-high 20 kills from Kaodi Wokocha the Eagles ground out a five-set win over the host Grove City College Wolverines in the morning match. Eastern then used a balanced attack and aggressive serving to overpower the Carlow University Celtics in three sets.

The Eagles (7-4) hit .271 as a team and pounded out 16 aces in the three-set win over Carlow. Max Bagileo and Tyler Younger each had seven kills adn Colby Arvesen had six. The Eastern passers helped the team to sideout on 18-of-21 opportunities through the first two sets as the Eagles grabbed a 2-0 lead with 25-11 and 25-9 wins in the opening frames. The Eagles won the third set 25-20 despite struggling on offense. Arvesen had two kills, two blocks, and an ace in the final set.

The early match against grove City had considerably more drama. The Eagles passed well in the first and third sets and won both 25-19. They went 14-of-20 on sideout chances in the first and 13-of-20 in the third, and they hit over .300 in both. Wokocha had six kills on nine swings in the third set. Connor Tucholski put away three balls on six opportunities in the same frame.

Ronan Landis served the Eagles to a 4-0 lead in the fourth, but Grove City used a six-point run to grab the lead in the set 10-8. Though Wokocha put a small run together to briefly put the Eagles back up, the Wolverines scored points with five consecutive servers to get to 24-21 in the fourth, and they forced a fifth set with a block.

Playing in the fifth set for just the second time this year, the Eagles looked to improve on their first effort, a 3-2 loss to Elmira. After a quick sideout, the Eagles jumped ahead to a 5-0 lead with Bagileo at the service line. They held that five-point lead until 12-7 and were able to earn the final three points on sideouts to secure the win. Tucholski finished the match with his tenth kill of the match.

Landis had 20 assists and Josh Hrabosky had 19. Wokocha hit .350 in the grove city match and terminated all three of his attacks in the Carlow. match. Max Bushong had a team-high 10 digs and did not have a receiving error in the morning match.

The Eagle will host the Drew University Rangers on Tuesday. Drew won both match-ups between the two teams last year.
