ST. DAVIDS, Pa.– A strong start was not enough as Eastern University Men's Volleyball dropped the final three sets and the match to the visiting Drew University Rangers in a non-league contest that was moved forward by 90 minutes to beat the upcoming snowstorm.
Up 2-1 in the match, Eagles held a 22-18 lead in the fourth set. The Rangers earned a sideout on a service error and then took advantage of four Eastern attack errors to serve out the set and force a fifth set. With some big blocking and a couple attack errors, the guests ran out to an 8-3 lead in the short fifth set. The two teams traded sideouts to the finish and the Rangers emerged with a 15-9 win to claim their first win of the year. The Eagles are now 1-2 in five set matches.
The Eagles (7-5) won the opening set 25-22 and the second set 25-18. The first set lacked rhythm and Eastern hit only .143 to secure the win, but things started to roll in the second. The Eagles put away 13 kills and hit .409 with four blocks to jump out to the two set lead.
The Eagles trailed early in the third and though they pulled to within two at 13-11, they were not able to take the lead.
It seemed that things had stabilized and the home side seemed to grab control with big serving runs from
Symir Byrd and
Josh Hrabosky before hitting errors started to pile up late.
Kaodi Wokocha led the Eagles with 14 kills, and
Josiah Cash had nine.
Ronan Landis distributed 23 assists.
The Eagle have three matches this weekend. They are at the University of Valley Forge on Friday and will host Virginia Wesleyan and Immaculata on Saturday.
