Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Stopped at #13 Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa.– Eastern University Men's Lacrosse dropped a 16-8 road test against the #13 Swarthmore College Garnet in a local rivalry game. The Garnet (2-0) took advantage of their extra-man chances with four goals on their first six stints with an extra player. The Eagles scored five fourth-quarter goals to close the gap after the Garnet built a big early lead.

The Eagles (1-3) won three-of-six faceoffs in the opening quarter, but the Garnet scored the first three goals of the contest. The Eagles finally got on the board with a Frankie Fanelli tally with 1:39 left. Swarthmore had a 15-11 edge in first-quarter shots.

The scoring trend continued in each of the next two periods. Though the Eagles got chances throughout the period, the Garnet scored the first five goals of the second quarter before Gavin Stark stopped the run with a goal from Litzenberger to close the gap to 8-2.

Swarthmore scored the first five goals of the third period as well. Three of those goals came with an extra-man. Michael Hardiman, who finished the game with seven, scored four-straight in that stretch. Clay Almgren had four goals and three assists in support.

The Garnet scored the first two of the fourth quarter before Eastern goalie Zach Klym took matters into his own hands. Klym, who finished with 13 saves in 54 minutes, got the ball in his stick with just over. nine minutes left in the game. With the Garnet smothering his passing options, Klym ran forward looking for a pass. When no pass opened up, Klym kept running. The senior goalie got to within five yards of the crease before a defender slid to him. Klym bounced in a shot for his first career tally.

Gavin Stark tipped in a pass from Christopher Fanelli with seven minutes left. Less than a minute later Brett Gougler put in his third of the year on a nice twister shot.

The Eagles got a man-up chance after a pair of Swarthmore penalties. Litzenberger buried a step-down shot for his 98th goal as an Eagle. Litzenberger scored five goals in his freshman year at Utica, now has 103 total for his career. Brennan Kaut scored the final goal of the game for the Eagles before Swarthomre tacked on a final goal with two minutes left.

Benjamin Souder won 9-of-19 faceoffs.

The Eagles will stay in the Centennial Conference with a home game against Ursinus on Saturday at noon. That game, initially scheduled for Radnor Street Road, will be back on Olson Field.
