GETTYSBURG, Pa. — All five starters scored in double-digits as Eastern University Men's Basketball earned an 84-77 win over the Wilson College Phoenix in the consolation match of the Gettysburg College Tip-Off Tournament. Otis Onyeka had 18 points and a career-best 17 rebounds to earn All-Tournament honors.
Looking to bounce back after a tough-loss to the No. 2 Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets. The Eagles (1-1) needed to improve their percentage from the floor and do a better job on the glass against a Wilson team that took the host Bullets to the horn in an 81-79 loss. Though they made only 3-of-14 from long range, the Eagles made nearly 62 percent of their shots inside the arc.
Eastern scored seven of the first nine points of the game and forced a Wilson timeout after Onyeka blocked a shot and hammered home a dunk at the other end. The Phoenix (0-2) responded with a 13-to-2 run to lead 15-9. Eastern's only basket in that stretch was a thundering dunk from
Josh Harris of a pocket pass from
DaRon Sherman. Harris finished the game with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Sherman had 14 points and five assists.
After an Eastern timeout, the Eagles responded with back-to-back baskets from Sherman and a 3-pointer from
Nick Mate to pull to within a point at 17-16. Eventually the Eagles took the lead for good when Onyeka scored nine points in a row for a 27-22 lead.
Connor Fleet then hit inside and outside to push the Eastern lead to 32-22 with four minutes left. The Eagles led 38-29 at halftime. Onyeka had 14 points and 11 rebounds in 11 minutes on the floor. The Eagles had a 27-11 edge in rebounds at the break.
The Phoenix, who feature three transfers named Jalen who can all score, twice closed the gap to three pints early in the second half. Each time, the Eagles had an answer and the lead was double-digits more often than it was not.
In Wilson's opener against Gettysburg, Jalen Bowie, transfer from Shippensburg, went for 30 points. This afternoon, Jalen Pierce, a transfer from Millersville, hit 11-of-13 shots including 4-of-4 from deep to post a game-high 30. The Eagles held Bowie to nine points. Jaylin Davis came off the bench to score 19.
Eastern took only five 3-pointers after halftime. Sherman made 8-of-8 from the line, and the team took 26 foul shots, but they left the Phoenix a little window by missing 11 from the stripe.
Anthony Williams went 5-for-5 for the game and finished with 11, and Fleet had 15.
Dejuan Taylor had six points and five rebounds off the bench.
The Eagles will host the Dickinson College Red Devils on Thursday. Dickinson opened the season with an exhibition loss to Lafayette. The Red Devils are playing in a tournament at Penn State Harrisburg.
