ST. DAVIDS, Pa.— On the final day of the program's most successful season since 2015, Eastern University Field Hockey honored the program's eight seniors before taking on the 24th ranked York College Spartans. The Eagles (8-10, 1-6) defended bravely, but the Spartans (12-6, 6-1) found a goal before half and two right after the intermission to claim a 3-0 win.
Playing against a team that has spent time in the national rankings for the fifth time this year, the Eagles found themselves in a defensive posture early. Though the Spartans forced a defensive save from
Kacie Agnew and had the first three shots of the game, the Eagles earned the first penalty corner. Eastern executed well, but York goalie Abby Smith stopped back-to-back efforts from in close by Bailey DiGregorio.
York finished the first quarter with a 7-2 edge in shots, but the Eagles kept the game level with four saves from
Angelina Catania.
The Spartans had their heaviest pressure of the game in the early part of the second quarter.
Kara Frantz and Agnew each made defensive saves and Catania made three stops in the first half fo the second. York finally broke through on a goal off a cross from the right side with less than ninety seconds to play in the half. Eastern had a final corner but Smith stopped a shot from
Ryhanna Ridgeway.
The game remained a one-goal affair until York scored twice in a minute late in the third quarter.
Agnew finished the game with a season-high three defensive saves, Catania made 11 stops. With 159 stops this year, the sophomore backstop finishes in a tie with Cherie Hunter (1993) and Gena Schlegel (1997) for the fourth-highest single-season save mark.
