READING, Pa.— Eastern University Women's Volleyball (13-5, 2-1) controlled the action throughout and earned a three-set MAC Commonwealth win at Alvernia University.
Viviana Fragoso finished with a match-best 24 digs, and
Hannah Pringle pounded 13 more kills to move into the seventh spot on Eastern's career list.
While Eastern has dominated the match-up over the years, the Eagles came into this match knowing that they could take nothing for granted. Several strong service runs led to a 20-10 Eastern lead on the way to a 25-14 win. Pringle,
Jessie Schreiber, and
Alexis Standford each put away four balls and they Eagles hit .257.
Sarah Furey had eight of her 20 assists in the opening frame.
Fragoso and
Kallie Rogers served the Eagles to a 10-3 edge in the second. The Eastern lead grew to 24-12.
Carleigh Orr delivered a kill to stop a three-point Alvernia run and earn a 25-15 win in the second. Rogers had nine assists in the second and Pringle had six kills on 11 attacks.
With her 13 kills tonight, Pringle is up to 1344 for her career. She jumps in front of Kara Hildebrand on the all-time list. Charity Nyce is sixth with 1372 and Stephanie Elechko is fifth with 1379.
Alvernia (6-8, 0-3) built a brief lead at 15-12 in the third set, but service runs with Furey and Stanford at the line flipped the score and had Eastern up 21-17. After the teams traded sideouts, the Golden Wolves found another run to take a 23-22 lead.
Schreiber stopped the run before going back to the service line. The junior opposite had served three times in her career before last Saturday. She found her target twice and Pringle delivered a pair of kills to end the match. Schreiber had six kills in the third and finished with 10 kills and a .318 hitting percentage. She also added four blocks.
Grace Cooper added 10 digs and
Josie Arezina had seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage.
"It is good to pick up a conference win," Head Coach
Mark Birtwistle said after the match. "I thought we had some good service runs and had strong production from Jessie and Josie on the right side."
The Eagles will host the Hood College Blazers on Tuesday.
