Field Hockey Stopped at Widener

CHESTER, Pa.— Eastern University Field Hockey (8-9, 1-5) scored twice and finished with a 10-6 edge in penalty corners, but the host Widener Pride scored three times in a six-minute stretch in the second quarter and held on for a 6-2 MAC Commonwealth win. CJ Summa and Morgan Unruh each scored for the Eagles.

The Pride (10-6, 3-3) opened the scoring in 13th minute after forcing an Eastern turnover in deep. The Eagles answered quickly after winning a ball on a press. After getting fouled int he midfield, Unruh fired a long pass into the circle. Summa collected the feed, made a quick move and dropped slipped home her tenth goal of the year.

The decisive burst in the game started with a stroke in the 20th. the call came while the Eagles were defending a penalty corner. Forty-six seconds later Widener caught the Eagles leaning forward and scored in transition. Angelina Catania stopped the initial shot, and Kacie Agnew made a diving effort to block the rebound at the goal line, but the ball slipped just over the line for a 3-1 edge. Another transition goal gave the hosts a 4-1 lead at the half.

Early in the second half, the Eagles closed the gap on Unruh's seventh of the year. The senior forward slapped home a one-time effort at the top of the circle off a well-weighted feed from Kara Frantz. Summa started the rush with a steal and a pass.

The Pride answered with a goal less than a minute later and added a tally on a blistering shot from the edge of the circle early in the fourth.

Still battling, the Eagles had six shots and three penalty corners in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles will honor their seniors on Saturday when they host York in the season-finale at 11:00 am.
