Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Stevenson

ST. DAVIDS, Pa. - Eastern Men's Soccer delivered a strong first half and held a 1-0 advantage midway through the second, but a late Stevenson rally flipped the script as the Eagles fell 3-2 on Wednesday night at Olson Field.

The Eagles dictated the tempo early, controlling possession and generating several dangerous chances off set pieces. Their persistence paid off in the 40th minute when João Tarabal's free kick deflected off a Stevenson defender and found the back of the net, sending Eastern into halftime with a well-earned 1-0 lead.

The Mustangs, however, took control of the match after halftime, putting consistent pressure on Eastern's back line. In the 66th minute, a penalty was called in the box, and Stevenson's leading scorer, Gianfranco Vitella, scored his 11th goal of the season to tie the contest at 1-1.

Just 41 seconds later, Stevenson struck again. Ellis Amos sent a cross into the box that deflected off a defender, and Gaston Magrinat-Valdes buried a shot into the top corner to give the visitors a 2-1 edge. The Mustangs made it 3-1 five minutes later when Carter Gourley found Magrinat-Valdes on the left side for an almost identical finish—his second goal of the match.

The Eagles pushed forward and created several late chances. Zach Sievert brought Eastern back within one in the 77th minute, scoring his eighth goal of the season to make it 3-2. The Eagles continued to press, earning multiple restart opportunities—including a final free kick in the closing seconds—but couldn't find the equalizer as Stevenson held on for the win.

Eastern (5-9-1, 1-3) will be back home at Olson Field on Saturday, Oct. 25 against Alvernia. Kickoff is set for 2:00 pm.
