YORK, Pa.— An 86th minute goal proved to be the difference as the host York College Spartans (10-3-2, 3-0), emerged with a 1-0 win over in a rematch of last fall's MAC Commonwealth Semifinal.
Faith Leake made ten stops in goal for the Eagles.
When Eastern came to York last for the MAC Commonwealth Tournament last fall, the Spartans scored four times in the opening 23 minutes of the match. Today, the Eagles (7-4-3, 1-2) weathered a few early chances and found their defensive footing in front of Leake. The Spartans put six of their nine shots on goal, but Leake was up to the task to keep the game scoreless at the half.
Though the Spartans had more of the play in the second half, their moment actually came off a stretch where the Eagles had pushed forward. After an Eastern turnover deep, York escaped with a long dribbling run before pushing a ball wide to the left. York junior forward Meg Kaltoff chose her moment well and found her way to a Lexi Mazzella pass on the left side of the box. Her quick shot slipped inside the post for her fifth goal in the last three games. She scored both goals in York's 2-1 win at Misericordia midweek.
The Eagles will look to finish the way to give themselves another shot at York in the postseason. They will host Stevenson on Tuesday. The Mustangs (7-2-5, 3-0) sit tied with Messiah and York atop the league standings and have not given up a goal in the last five outings. Eastern has three of their final four matches at home.
